WORLDWIDE: In my early days as a design engineer at a rural technology development centre in South Africa, I was faced with the challenge of addressing frequent bearing failures on the fan units of a machine used to remove the hulls from local grain sorghum, a drought-resistant staple food. The diesel-powered hammer mill and hull-removing package offered a popular alternative to labour-intensive manual stamping.
