Goldwind launches its new collection of offshore and onshore flagship products at China Wind Power 2023 in Beijing, October 2023
Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind recently unveiled its new collection of offshore and onshore flagship products at the China Wind Power (CWP) 2023 exhibition in Beijing.
“In response to changes in market demand, our new products are tailored to future-oriented application scenarios, and we are committed to creating the utmost value for customers, while promoting the development of the renewable energy industry,” says Zhao Xiang, General Manager of Goldwind Product and Solutions Center.
‘Outside the box’ onshore turbines
Premiered at the exhibition, Goldwind's new onshore turbines have a power range of 6.X~10.X. They are smarter and more reliable than ever, as well as being more user-friendly, and are capable of high performance at a full range of wind speeds. The 6.X~7.X series, in particular, is pitched at the global market.

The new onshore turbines have been designed to ensure stability and reliability in operation. Updates in smart sensing, smart diagnosis, and smart coordination make the turbines more environmentally-friendly and easily grid-connected. Compared with its predecessors, Goldwind's new onshore turbines generate 23% greater power across 20% fewer installation sites in the wind farm and achieve 1.6-3.3% higher IRR, on equal wind speed.
“Smarter” offshore turbines
At the exhibition, Goldwind also released its new offshore turbines, which it describes as “smarter, more dependable, affordable, easy to use and very effective”. Fan Yanbin, Product Director of Offshore Turbine at Goldwind explains that these are specifically made for waters with different wind speed characteristics. The impeller diameter is 26X with a power range of 12X to 16X.

Taking inspiration from Goldwind’s world-record-breaking GWH252-16MW offshore wind turbine – installed in Pingtan, Fujian Province in June 2023 – the new offshore turbines continue the company’s high-reliability, high-performance and made-in-China ‘DNA’. They epitomise engineering efficiency and aim to provide ample energy supply in the event of typhoons.
Goldwind is continually evolving its offshore wind turbines. The new collection, arranged with Goldwind's self-developed high-performance airfoil design and carbon fibre girder, as well as a more efficient transmission chain and improved smart technology, sees a 3-5% surge of power generation per unit and 5-10% leap in maximum wind farm return.
Eliminating pain points in the industry
Goldwind is also rolling out its 2.0 grid-forming (GFM) wind turbine product to address power grid stability problems such as low inertia and under-performance in frequency and voltage modulation. Taking a multi-pronged approach to wind energy storage and product integration, the company has enhanced the grid capabilities of frequency and voltage modulation, resolving the need for grids and power generators at the source.

Goldwind's 2.0 GFM turbine is the first of its kind to be accredited in digital verification, standalone verification, and station verification, which applies to multiple scenarios such as desert-, gobi- or wilderness-based projects, source-grid-load-storage integration, distributed scenarios, and deep- and high-sea cases. “It is a viable solution for providing strong grid support while enhancing power generator revenue,” says Yang Zhiqian, Deputy General Manager of Goldwind R&D centre.
First carbon footprint-certified wind power product
Goldwind has also published a research report on the carbon footprint of windpower jointly with China General Certification Center (CGCC). And relevant products have been certified with the ‘Product Carbon Footprint Declaration’ by CGCC.
According to audit results, the GHG emissions per unit of grid-connected power for Goldwind's GWH182-5.3/6.2/7.2/7.5MW wind turbines range from 3.88g CO2.eq/kWh to 4.55g CO2.eq/kWh throughout their life cycle. This is less than 1% of the emissions from thermal power generation.
“Soft power in connection with carbon is instrumental to Goldwind's implementation of our development strategy in the offshore and offshore wind power market and our national strategy for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality,” says Yang Shuo, Senior Standardization Engineer at Goldwind.
Goldwind has taken a groundbreaking step by synchronising the release of audit results on the carbon footprint of its flagship products with the launch of new products. This strategic approach involves the integrated development of both soft and hard powers. Goldwind is establishing a paradigm that steers the power industry towards a green and low-carbon future. The initiative supports the verification of the low-carbon attributes of wind power products and aims to elevate China's wind power industry to global standards, fostering a high-standard 'go global' movement.
Future developments
“At Goldwind, we accelerate innovation to secure a constant supply of advanced, socially-responsible wind power products and technologies, helping China's wind power capabilities to reach new heights,” says Xue Naichuan, Vice President at Goldwind.
“Together with our national and international supply chain partners, we will continue to make remarkable achievements in furthering the use of clean energy worldwide,” concludes Naichuan.
